A patient comes complaining that her throat becomes so swollen after eating shellfish that she finds it hard to breathe and to swallow.

In this example, there are two aspects that are significant for the patient: the symptom triggered by the allergy (throat becomes swollen) and the allergen that triggers the allergy – shellfish.
